MCDC awards Initiative Awards
18 November 2009
As part of the MCDC Investigator programme, Initiative Awards of up to $40,000 have been awarded to 3 MCDC Investigators who were previously supported by the Gates Malaria Partnership (GMP).
The aim of these awards was to –
• Provide added value to an existing research project.
• Provide the background information that will help in the formulation of a new research project.
Applications were reviewed by a panel of independent experts. The primary criterion for making an award was an assessment of the way in which this small grant was likely to provide added value to research directed at the control of malaria in Africa.
The 3 successful applications were from:
Pamela Magistrado for a proposal entitled 'Optimising inhibition of binding of fresh Plasmodium falciparum isolates from pregnant women to chondroitin sulphate A using DBL4-VAR2CSA antibodies'
Fred Matovu for a proposal entitled 'An Investigation of the Economic and Socio-Cultural factors influencing Access and Utilization of Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in Uganda'
and
Seth Owusu-Agyei for a proposal entitled 'The Effects Of Malaria In Pregnancy On The Incidence Of Malaria During Infancy In A High Malaria Transmission Area In Ghana: A Prospective Cohort Study '
