MCDC awards Initiative Awards (MCDC student presentation at KCMC workshop 2010) (C) Iskander, D (MCDC) 2010

As part of the MCDC Investigator programme, Initiative Awards of up to $40,000 have been awarded to 4 MCDC Investigators who were previously supported by the Gates Malaria Partnership (GMP).

The aim of these awards was to provide added value to an existing research project as well as provide the background information that will help in the formulation of a new research project.

This was the second round of these awards and applications were reviewed by a panel of independent experts. The primary criterion for making an award was an assessment of the way in which this small grant was likely to provide added value to research directed at the control of malaria in Africa. The 4 successful applications were from:

Adiel Mushi for a proposal entitled 'Feasibility and Acceptability of Rapid Diagnostic Test for Malaria in the Context of Home Management of Malaria in Tanzania'

Raphael N'Guessan for a proposal entitled 'Evaluation of Chlorfenapyr applied as an IRS for control of pyrethroid resistant Anopheles gambiae and Culex quinquefasciatus: a household randomized trial in southern Benin'

Themba Mzilhowa for a proposal entitled 'Preliminary data on impact of combined scale up of indoor residual house spray [IRS] and long-lasting insecticide treated bednets [LLINs] on development of pyrethroid resistance in Malawi'

and

Wilson Mandala for a proposal entitled 'Cytokine profiles and regulatory T cell levels in children recovering from uncomplicated malaria living in highly endemic malaria areas'
