Strengthening research capacity

MCDC 2nd Annual Career Development Group meeting, Uganda

MCDC Career Development Group meeting
26 January 2015 to 28 January 2015

The 2nd annual Career Development Group meeting was held in Uganda from the 26 – 28 January 2015.  The aim of the meeting was to bring the group back together to review progress and process one year on, share experiences and resources and plan for moving things forward.

The three-day programme included the introduction and welcoming of the Career Development Groups’ newly-appointed co-ordinators;  as well as interactive group working to develop a career development competency framework for African researchers and research training programmes for African PhD and Postdoctoral researchers.

The meeting included lively and enthusiastic discussions, which covered topics such as what is meant by an “independent” researcher, what support is needed for an early-career postdoctoral researcher in Africa (mentoring vs supervision), and the different roles of the mentor and the supervisor and how institutions manage the lack of capacity to support researchers but keep the distinction between these two roles.
