Background to our programme
The Malaria Capacity Development Consortium (MCDC) follows on from the successful Gates Malaria Partnership (GMP) programme of developing research capacity in malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa.
With further funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Wellcome Trust, the MCDC is supporting twenty-eight of the GMP postdoctoral scientists (now known as MCDC Investigators) through a mentoring programme.
Through a process of self-selection, each investigator has been matched with a mentor of their choice. The key feature of this mentoring programme is the shift in emphasis in the mentoring relationship - that is, away from the previous student – supervisor relationship of facilitation and dependence to a relationship where the emphasis is on the mentor enabling the mentee to become independent.
